The Second Marriage - Wedding Invitations

The Second Marriage

WEDDING Invitations

Invitations to the marriage of a widow—if she is very young—are sent in the name of her parents exactly as were the invitations to her first wedding, excepting that her name instead of being merely Priscilla is now written Priscilla Barnes Leaming, thus:

Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Barnes

request the honour of your presence

at the marriage of their daughter

Priscilla Barnes Leaming

to

                      etc.

A second marriage might be just as important, or maybe even more so, than a first one. So the invitations should be just as special, at least.

The things to take into consideration are whether or not it is a second marriage for one or both of the happy couple. Who is hosting this marriage is also relevant, as it may very well not be the parents of the bride this time. However, for a younger bride it’s possible that her parents are hosting this wedding, as well.

The bride’s name is important, also. Does she still go by the name from the previous marriage? Will she be changing it? Should the maiden name be included? These options should be weighed and discussed for the invitations.

Also, if there are children involved it might be relevant to include them in the invitation.

As far as the wording is concerned, the second marriage can be expressed as “A new beginning” or “a new chapter in life.” The rest of the invitation would be printed just like any wedding invitation.

The day of the week, the date, and the year should be spelled out. The time of day should also be included, and whether or not it is casual, semi-casual, semi-formal, or Black Tie. And the address should always be printed out, as well, although if it is a local wedding, and all of the guests are local, the state may be omitted. An RSVP is always desirable, whether there will be cocktails and a buffet afterwards at the reception, or a formal sit-down dinner.
Special thanks to Emily Post on her wonderful tips on etiquette and invites.
